RESUMO

The deep ocean is the last natural biodiversity refuge from the reach of human activities. Deepwater sharks and rays are among the most sensitive marine vertebrates to overexploitation. One-third of threatened deepwater sharks are targeted, and half the species targeted for the international liver-oil trade are threatened with extinction. Steep population declines cannot be easily reversed owing to long generation lengths, low recovery potentials, and the near absence of management. Depth and spatial limits to fishing activity could improve conservation when implemented alongside catch regulations, bycatch mitigation, and international trade regulation. Deepwater sharks and rays require immediate trade and fishing regulations to prevent irreversible defaunation and promote recovery of this threatened megafauna group.

Based on the analysis of long-term data from bottom trawl surveys (1977-2021), changes in the spatial distribution, position of the boundaries of the ranges and the catch rates of the nine most common deep-sea skates of the genus Bathyraja in the Russian waters of the Northwestern Pacific (B. violacea, B. aleutica, B. matsubarai, B. maculata, B. bergi, B. taranetzi, B. minispinosa, B. interrupta, and B. isotrachys) are considered. During the surveyed period, significant changes in the spatial distribution were observed, which are probably due to both subjective reasons (changes in the number of trawling stations, surveyed depths, etc.) and climatic changes. No monotonous displacement of the northern or southern boundaries of the range or its center in one direction was observed in any area of any species during the entire observation period. At the same time, shifts in the boundaries of the ranges of different species in different areas occurred for different decades, i.e., the boundaries of the ranges slowly fluctuated or "pulsed" near some average annual position. In general, from the 1970s to the 1980s, the number of skates grew; from the 1980s to the 1990s, it decreased; from the 1990s to the 2000s, it fluctuated at the achieved level; from the 2000s to the 2010s, it grew again; and from the 2010s to the 2020s, it decreased again. These trends coincide with previously identified ecosystem rearrangements under the influence of climatic and oceanological changes. The identification of links between changes in spatial distribution, range boundaries and catch rates with climatic and oceanological factors require separate additional studies.

The results of long-term (1948-2021) studies on the spatial and vertical distribution, dynamics of abundance, and size composition of the Aleutian skate Bathyraja aleutica in the North Pacific Ocean are presented. Maximum densities of this species were characteristic of the eastern Bering Sea slope, off the central Aleutian Islands, consisting of the Pacific waters off southeastern Kamchatka and the northern Kurils, and northeastern Sakhalin. This species was most abundant at depths of 100-600 m; in the cold months, B. aleutica migrates to greater depths for over-wintering, and in warm months it feeds at shallower depths. Bathyraja aleutica was most common at the bottom, at temperatures around 3 °C. The total length of individuals ranged from 9.6-170 cm, with a predominance of skates with a length of 50-100 cm. Males did not differ significantly from females in body weight and length. The maximum values of the condition factor were typical for the autumn-winter period. Across years, there was an increase in Aleutian skate catch rates from the western Bering Sea and the Sea of Okhotsk, and a decrease in the Pacific waters off the Kuril Islands and Kamchatka, as well as in Alaskan waters.

Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) is an essential target of commercial fishing in the North Pacific Ocean. Previous studies have suggested the existence of marine and lake ecological forms of this species within its range. The lake ecological form of herring has a shortened life cycle, spending the winter and spawning in brackish waters near the shoreline without long migrations for feeding; it also has a relatively smaller body size than the marine form. Genetic-based studies have shown that brackish water Pacific herring not only can be distinguished as a separate lake ecological form but possibly has its genetic legacy. Here, as part of an ongoing study, using ddRAD-sequencing data for marine and lake ecological forms from a total of 54 individuals and methods of comparative bioinformatics, we describe genomic signatures of freshwater adaptivity in Pacific herring. In total, 253 genes containing discriminating SNPs were found, and part of those genes was organized into genome clusters, also known as "genomic islands of divergence". Moreover, the Tajima's D test showed that these loci are under directional selection in the lake populations of the Pacific herring. Yet, most discriminating loci between the lake and marine ecological forms of Pacific herring do not intersect (by gene name) with those in other known marine fish species with known freshwater/brackish populations. However, some are associated with the same physiological trait-osmoregulation.

Based on a critical analysis of scientific publications for the last 200 years and on the collected specimens, a complete annotated list of both typical freshwater ichthyofauna of Sakhalin Island, with the inclusion of marine species that can be found in brackish coastal waters, is reported for the first time. The annotated list includes 226 species classified in three classes, 26 orders, 68 families, 29 subfamilies, and 148 genera. For 160 species, information is provided on collection samples deposited in various museums around the world, 36 of which are type specimens. For each species, conservation status (according to IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and the Red Book of the Sakhalin region), zoogeographic characteristics (distribution within Sakhalin Island and globally), abundance and commercial value are given. For a number of species, more detailed information on synonymy and nomenclature is provided. The study area is located in the western North Pacific and includes the entire coast of Sakhalin Island in the Sea of Okhotsk and the northern Sea of Japan, as well as the adjacent Sea of Okhotsk coast of northern Hokkaido, Japan.

The pollution of the Siberian Arctic seas bottom by anthropogenic debris is assessed for the first time based on the results of bottom trawl surveys conducted in the Chukchi, East Siberian, Laptev, and Kara seas in 2019. In the East Siberian Sea and the Laptev Sea, no seabed litter was detected. The debris on bottom and near bottom was found in the Kara and Chukchi seas only. Plastic was the most frequently occurring type of seabed litter. The main source of the garbage encountered in the Kara Sea is the waste related to fishing activities in the Barents Sea.

New data on lipid and fatty acid profiles are presented, and the dynamics of the studied components in muscles in the males and females of the beaked redfish, Sebastes mentella, in the depth gradient of the Irminger Sea (North Atlantic) is discussed. The contents of the total lipids (TLs), total phospholipids (PLs), monoacylglycerols (MAGs), diacylglycerols (DAGs), triacylglycerols (TAGs), cholesterol (Chol), Chol esters, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs), and wax esters were determined by HPTLC; the phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylcholine (PC), and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) were determined by HPLC; and fatty acids of total lipids were determined using GC. The Chol esters prevailed in muscles over the storage TAGs, and the wax ester content was high, which is a characteristic trait of vertically migrating species. Specific dynamics in certain PL in redfish were found to be depended on depth, suggesting that PLs are involved in the re-arrangement of the membrane physicochemical state and the maintenance of motor activity under high hydrostatic pressure. The high contents of DHA and EPA were observed in beaked redfish muscles is the species' characteristic trait. The MUFAs in muscles include dietary markers of zooplankton (copepods)-20:1(n-9) and 22:1(n-11), whose content was found to be lower in fish sampled from greater depths.

A new species of softnose skate (Arhynchobatidae), Bathyraja sexoculata Misawa, Orlov, Orlova, Gordeev and Ishihara is described on the basis of five specimens collected from off the east coast of Simushir Island, Kuril Islands, located in the western North Pacific. The specimens conformed to the genus Bathyraja by having the anteriormost pectoral-fin skeleton almost reaching the snout tip, and a slender unsegmented rostral cartilage. Within Bathyraja, the new species belongs to the subgenus Arctoraja (currently with four valid species) due to the relatively short tail (79-86% of disc width), high count of predorsal caudal vertebrae (more than 86), and large strong nuchal and scapular thorns. It is most similar to Bathyraja (Arctoraja) smirnovi, distributed in the Seas of Japan and Okhotsk, in having tail thorns not extending to the nuchal area, median thorns discontinuous from the nape to the tail, and no mid-dorsal thorns. However, B. sexoculata can be distinguished from B. smirnovi by the following characters: three pairs of white blotches on the dorsal disc surface (vs. blotches absent, or a pair of white or dark blotches in B. smirnovi), dark blotch around cloaca, dark bands along mid ventral line of tail (vs. dark blotch and band usually absent ventral disc surface in B. smirnovi), 86-93 predorsal caudal vertebrae (vs. 80-87 in B. smirnovi), and a unique mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequence. Proportional measurements, including disc width, disc length, head length, preoral length, prenarial length, internarial distance, eye diameter, and tail length, also differ between the two species. For the referential purpose, geographical variations of B. smirnovi distributed in the Seas of Japan and Okhotsk are analyzed and clarified based on morphological and genetic data. Significant morphological and genetic differences were found between local populations in the Seas of Japan and Okhotsk.

The seasonal dynamic of lipids and their fatty acid constituents in the lipid sac and muscles of pelagic postlarval Leptoclinus maculatus, an ecologically important fish species in the Arctic food nets, in Kongsfjord, Svalbard waters was studied. The determination of the qualitative and quantitative content of the total lipids (TLs), total phospholipids (PLs), triacylglycerols (TAGs), cholesterol (Chol), cholesterol esters (Chol esters) and wax esters was analyzed by TLC, the phosphatidylserine (PS), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylinositol (PI), phosphatidylcholine (PC), lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) and sphingomyelin (SM) were determined by HPLC, and fatty acids of total lipids using GC. The lipid sac is a system of cavities filled with lipids, and it is not directly connected to organs of the digestive system. The wall's inner layer is a multinuclear symplast that has a trophic function. The results provide additional knowledge on the role of lipids in the biochemical and physiological adaptation of fish to specific environments and clarify the relationship between fatty acids and the food specialization of postlarvae. Analysis of the fatty acid (FA) profile of TLs in the muscles and lipid sac of daubed shanny pelagic postlarvae showed it to be tissue- and organ-specific, and tightly associated with seasonal variations of environmental factors (temperature conditions and trophic resources).

A checklist is presented of animal species obtained in 68,903 trawl tows during 459 research surveys performed by the Pacific Research Fisheries Center (TINRO-Center) over an area measuring nearly 25 million km2 in the Chukchi and Bering seas, Sea of Okhotsk, Sea of Japan and North Pacific Ocean in 1977-2014 at depths of 5 to 2,200 m. The checklist comprises 949 fish species, 588 invertebrate species, and four cyclostome species (some specimens were identified only to genus or family level). For each species details are given on the type of trawl (benthic and/or pelagic) and basins where the species was found. Comprehensiveness of data, taxonomic composition of catches, dependence of species richness on the survey area, sample size, and habitat, are considered. Ratios of various taxonomic groups of trawl macrofauna in pelagic and benthic zones and in different basins are analysed. Basins are compared based on species composition.

Eleven microsatellite loci were developed and characterized for the sablefish, Anoplopoma fimbria. The markers were identified from sequences obtained by next generation sequencing. Thirty samples from Aleutians Islands were genotyped. The amplifications were performed with three different annealing temperature and amplification products were visualized in ABI 3500 Genetic Analyzer. No evidence for scoring errors was detected by stuttering or due large allele dropout and neither of the loci presented a high null allele frequency (> 0.2). The number means of alleles per locus was of 12.21 and mean of observed and expected heterozygosity were of 0.60 and 0.75 respectively. The sablefish represents a resource of high commercial value on the coasts of Japan, Russia, Canada and west coast of the United States and these new primers could be useful to future diversity and structure population studies.
